Houston
Ezekiel Brewer
Though
he was a mighty "good-looking and jolly
fellow," Houston Ezekiel Brewer was known for his
extraordinary speaking abilities. Houston,
the 10th child of Emiline Watts and Robert Brewer, was often
invited to speak at different community functions. In fact,
he was a popular speaker at Claflin University’s annual
conferences.
Furthermore, Houston could have been
called a "jack of all trades."
Though his main occupation was that of a
farmer in Chesterfield County (Pageland), he
and his wife, Rosa Butler Brewer, once ran a
small store and restaurant that served worked
from the Rock Quarry. Houston also taught for
a while at the Oak Hill School.
Rosa
often referred to her husband as the
"chimney corner lawyer" because
folks would come to him for advice. Houston
never became a legal counselor, however, his
talents undoubtedly were passed down to his
eldest son, Seymour, who became the attorney
in the family.
