KENT COLLEGE OF LAW

Attorney Coyness Loyal Ennix, the husband of Blanche Nivens Ennix (daughter of Effie) was born in Hillsboro, Alabama. He founded The Kent College of Law (Nashville, Tennessee), one of the few Black law schools in the country. It was his hope that eventually Blacks would challenge the legal system regarding segregation and he wanted to have enough Black lawyers to accomplish this awesome task. He trained lawyers such as Moses Davies and Robert Lillard. Fortunately, he lived to see the historic Brown vs. Board of Education which was his dream.

Ennix was the first African American member of the Nashville Housing Authority and Nashville Board of Education. He was a pivotal factor who saw the integration of Nashville schools.

Uncle Coyness was a historic leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He believed in the cause and did everything to make Blacks become more equal.

He was the father of Frank Martin 111(an attorney in Oakland, California), Coyness Loyal (a renown thoracic surgeon in Oakland California and Russell Barbour( now deceased and former attorney in Nashville, Tennessee).

The Brewers are proud of Coyness Ennix, a pioneer in the legacy of Civil Rights law.
